November Notice

Orginally posted by Lance Stites, NCWest

Hello everyone,

It’s been a busy couple of weeks here since the launch of Aion. The post-launch period of many games means that you have time for a bit of rest. After an MMO launches however, your job is just beginning.

Recently, we released a lot of information on the sales and success of Aion in respect to Europe and North America, and also globally. We are off to a very, very respectable start.

We are constantly delighted that so many of you purchased and are now playing Aion. Shortly after Aion’s launch we experienced longer queue times than we would have liked. We reacted by working immediately on a server transfer system. However, the server transfer we began to implement was a rush job, and we are not happy with the result. As it currently stands, transferring characters is a manual process that would shift a significant percentage of our customer service staff members’ focus from issues like real money transfers/trading (RMT) and botting that we feel should take priority.

It’s a difficult decision, but we are delaying the deployment of our server transfer system until we can do it right for you. We will eventually honor our promise to give eligible players the opportunity to transfer for free, but we’re shooting to implement transfers in the first half of 2010, though we don’t have a specific deadline for you.

Moving on to much more positive news, in the past week we deployed a new patch to address a CryEngine.dll crash that we’ve seen reported commonly. (If you’re still seeing this issue, please report it in our tech support forums.)

Speaking of forums, our Community Team is focusing again on the forums and the website. The members of the team are investigating ways to improve the player experience in the forums and website. We are taking your feedback to update and improve the Aion web services overall.

It’s no secret that we’ve had our share of RMT spammers and been plagued by the associated problem of bots. We’re working to eliminate these persistent pests through a multipronged approach. We have instituted a dedicated Game Surveillance Unit (GSU). The GSU is a team whose primary mission is to identify and ban users violating our terms of service: bot users, RMT chat spammers, and the like. We just did an in-depth and focused sweep through the game to ban users in violation using some new methods with exciting capabilities that I’m personally very happy about. These new methods are going to catch a lot of bot users who thought they were safe. This week we’ve banned over 27,000 of these accounts, and we’ll keep searching for other offenders to continue improving the quality of your game environment.

Finally, outside of the complaints about bots and the RMT vermin, perhaps the biggest criticism from our players comes in relation to the pacing, experience curve, item drops, and overall difficulty and risk vs. reward in Aion current gameplay. I’m glad to share some preliminary responses from the Development Team and affirm to you their willingness to address these issues. Obviously, data tuning on a live MMO isn’t something you do carelessly, and it will take some time to fully implement. In the near future, we hope to deploy a short-term enhancement to address some of concerns that you have told us about across the board. We’re currently testing some game variables to increase experience gain and other factors. We look forward to sharing some good news on this soon.

Stepping away from the game as it is, we’re showing off Aion and its future plans this week at the G-Star convention in Korea, as well as DreamHack in Sweden! If you haven’t already had the chance, take a peek at the future of Aion.

Orginally Posted @ Mmorpg.com

A brief personal note: I’ve been hired (again) by NCsoft this week, to work as a developer and data analyst for their new Game Surveillance Unit. This CSI-sounding department is responsible for quashing botting and gold selling in their titles, some of which has been a bit of a problem of late. While this does introduce some potential biases in anything I might write here, I would hope that you, the reader would understand that I am already chock full of bias anyway, as would be anyone with strongly held opinions, and evaluate my writings accordingly. Especially when I write about something directly related to what I’m working on… say, gold farming?

Gold farming and selling in MMORPGs (the commonly used term within the industry being “RMT”, which stands for “Real Money Trading”) is, it’s safe to say, fairly controversial. A few games such as Ultima Online and Second Life embrace the blurring between virtual and real cash, but most games prohibit it, and most players (especially the more hard-core) claim to despise it. Yet, much like any other vice, there still seems to be a market for it.

I won’t rehash here whether or not RMT itself is a bad idea – there are plenty, including myself, who have written page after page on the subject. Instead, I think it would be interesting to look at a few commonly held opinions and suspicions players have about RMT and how game companies deal (or more often, fail to deal) with the problem.

“The great majority of gold farmers come from China. Why don’t Western games simply… ban China? Problem solved!”

Part of this is actually true – recent estimates place 80% to 85% of the RMT industry in China. This is because $1 goes a lot farther in China than in the West (and the Chinese government does its share to keep it that way), so it’s cost effective to pay workers to generate in-game cash and then turn around and convert it into its real-world equivalent. The stereotype of the Chinese gold farmer is unfortunately, for the most part, accurate (and the cause of a great deal of ugly racism in the process).

So given that, why don’t Western MMOs simply block players in China from accessing the game? Seems simple enough – after all, it’s not like Western MMOs are even sold in China, or intended for Chinese audiences (which have hundreds of MMOs that are). Yet, in practice? Not particularly. And again, we can blame the Chinese government for this, at least indirectly. Although a far cry from the oppressive regime it once was, the Chinese government still seeks to control the flow of information to its people on sensitive topics, and as part of that much of Chinese internet access is filtered – what some wags call “the Great Firewall of China”. Of course, this results in people being quite adept at dodging these restrictions through the use of proxies and VPN servers outside of the country. And those same proxy servers make it close to impossible to determine where users originate – something which tech-savvy Chinese farming operations make great use of. The cat and mouse game between these operations and MMO providers set on hunting them down has been going on for years, and as long as there is a real financial incentive for both sides to continue, it’s not set to stop any time soon.

And, while we’re on the topic of financial incentives:

“[MMO company] doesn’t do anything about gold farming because they’re in on it. They get kickbacks under the table from gold sellers, so they won’t ever make any serious attempt to stop them.”

Few rumors enrage me quite as much as this one – because not only is it fairly obviously untrue, it’s also pretty insulting. I’ve worked for two large MMO companies now, and have friends at most of the others, and I can say with 100% certainty that this is absolutely not happening. I have heard rumors of a few back-channel attempts by RMT companies to “come to informal arrangements” with MMO developers, and the response has always been overwhelmingly, brutally negative. In fact, few things anger MMO developers more than piratical gold farmers who make billions off of their work, and angering paying customers in the process, without so much as a by-your-leave.

But don’t take my word for it – take Occam’s Razor. If game developers wanted to monetize gold sales, they wouldn’t rely on uncontrolled offshore gold farmers that wreak havoc for their support staff. There are many examples of MMO developers who’ve tried to further monetize their game:

The “free-to-play” option, as seen recently by Dungeons and Dragons Online. Stop charging a subscription fee, and start monetizing through well-proven free-to-pay methods such as item shops and in-game advertising. This is an attractive option for games with low subscriber numbers who’d like to get a second chance at success.

Adding “item malls” even though you’re charging a subscription. World of Warcraft is hard to ignore here, and judging from all the people running around with Pandarens in-game it seems to be popular, if controversial.

The “SOEBay” model, where the developer runs eBay-style auctions between players and makes money off of transaction fees. In addition to SOE (which has also been aggressively introducing item malls), Linden Lab relies on transaction fees on currency sales between players in Second Life for a significant portion of their income.

Given all of the above, hopefully I’ve demonstrated that MMO developers are rarely shy about asking you for money directly. Why would they rely on shifty brokers outside of their control when they can simply open up a shopping cart directly, if they cared to?

“If MMO developers cared about farming and botting, they’d stop it. They don’t, because they make money off the accounts that the farmers and botters use, so they ignore them.”

The answer for this one sadly isn’t as cut and dried as the others, because to some extent it contains a grain of truth. Some farmers do in fact use paid accounts (especially earlier, when MMOs were first launched), and part of the cat-and-mouse game between CS enforcement and farming operations involves trying to drive up their cost of doing business by banning their accounts and forcing them to buy more. And, much as I noted in my last column, the amount of support dedicated to driving farmers and botters out of business is directly related to how much the developer is willing to allocate (and in so doing, take limited resources off of other parts of their budget). So, to some extent, it is true that some farmers are actually paying customers.

But not all, and the number of gold farmers that pay their $15 a month is dropping. How do farmers get around that cost?

Free trial accounts. If you’d like to know why you are prohibited from doing pretty much anything involving money or talking to people while on a free trial, this is why. Farmers would (and in some games still do) burn through an endless number of free trial accounts for games, naming their characters something nonsensical and spamming and killstealing their way through the game knowing (and not caring) that they would be banned quickly. Since that sort of behavior chases off paying customers fairly effectively as well, most developers that offer free trials have placed draconian limits on how much damage they can do in response, which then cripples new players who know the least about the game. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Credit card fraud. The next step, then, is to get an actual account without paying for it. Credit card fraud, using stolen cards, and charging back the transaction after the sale have all become so prevalent that credit card processors are actually starting to be leery of MMO developers due to the vast amount of fraud they’re saddled with. There’s not much about this that can be done that banks in general aren’t already dealing with; it’s just another cost of doing business, but this time on the developer’s side. (And some of the least reputable RMT sites have been known to turn around and use credit card numbers used to purchase gold to buy more game accounts.)

Account theft. Especially for World of Warcraft, stealing already developed characters has become quite the growth industry; to the point that more Trojan horses and keyloggers directly target World of Warcraft then, say, banking websites. Once an account is stolen, its wealth is disbursed (for later resale) and the character itself is used either for gold farming (especially using exploits, since the account is by definition not going to last very long) or for spamming and then rapidly discarded.

So, while there is a profit motive for dealing with farmers, it’s not the most obvious one – in addition to costing developers the subscription of angry players who don’t want to deal with farming and botting in their game, in many cases the accounts of farmers and botters are a net negative themselves.

This is a very brief summary of a fairly large problem, and one with few value judgments on the relative morality of gold buying, powerlevelling, or what have you. However you feel about these subjects, the wreckage from the current state of “the game” between developers and farmers is plain to see, and dealing with this is a challenge that every developer has to tackle if they want to deliver a successful, fun, and profitable product.

And much like any other vice, enforcement only goes so far, as long as there is a demand.

After each one-month milestone, new rewards become available and will be delivered via in-game express mail once redeemed.

Free time included in purchasing Aion counts toward your Veteran Rewards status, as does any time received from specified promotional programs that involve a player receiving free time. Your Aion game account page displays your Veteran Rewards time. It indicates which Veteran Rewards month you are eligible for.

The redemption process is very similar to the way that you redeemed Collector's Edition items (if you purchased either the Collector's Edition box or digital-only version of the game).

Note: The first month's Veteran Rewards won't be available until November 4, 2009.

Veteran Rewards FAQ

Q: What do I have to do in order to receive my Veteran Rewards?

A: If you have an active account, you don't need to do anything except log in to the game. After each one-month milestone, the appropriate Veteran Rewards will be added to your Aion game account and delivered via in-game express mail once they are redeemed.

Q: How do I redeem my Veteran Rewards?

A: Follow these steps:

Log in to your NCsoft Master Account.

Click the Game Accounts link.

Select an Aion game account listed on the Game Accounts page.

Click the Apply in-Game Items link in the Action section.

Select a server in which you have made a character, and click the Next button.

Select a character to receive the Veteran Rewards, and click the Next button.

Click the checkbox next to an item pack or packs, and click the Next button.

Review the confirmation page, and click the Apply the Items/Item Packs to This Character button.

Once you've assigned items to a character, log in to Aion and retrieve the items via in-game express mail.

For additional help, visit our knowledge base.

Q: What is the first day that I can expect my Veteran Rewards to show up?

A: Veteran Rewards will become available on the first day of each subscription month starting with the second month. Your Aion game account page displays your Veteran Rewards time. It indicates which Veteran Rewards month you are eligible for.

Note: The first month's Veteran Rewards won't be available until November 4, 2009.

Q: Where can I find out how many months I have played with an active account?

A: Your Aion game account page displays your Veteran Rewards time. It indicates which Veteran Rewards month you are eligible for.

You can view your earned Veteran Rewards time by logging in to your NCsoft Master Account. Click Game Accounts, and select your Aion game account. In the Account section, locate the Veteran Rewards Time section, which indicates the amount of time that you have played with an active account and earned Veteran Rewards for. Your Veteran Rewards time will not always match your total paid time (also displayed in this section) due to promotions you have taken advantage of, game account inactivation and reactivation, and so on.

Q: My account is no longer active. Can I still receive Veteran Rewards?

A: Yes, but the time that your account was inactive does not count toward your Veteran Rewards.

To receive your Veteran Rewards, reactivate your account via credit card, game time card, or another payment method, and the appropriate Veteran Rewards will become available for all of your characters. Just log in to your NCsoft Master Account, redeem the Veteran Rewards, and they will be waiting via in-game express mail.

Q: If I use game time cards, will that count toward my Veteran Rewards?

A: Yes. You are rewarded for the number of months you have an active account, no matter which payment method you choose.

Q: Can I pay for a certain number of months into the future in order to receive my Veteran Rewards now?

A: No. Veteran Rewards are delivered based on the number of months you have had an active account. This only applies to time that as already passed, not the future.

Q: I participated in the Aion closed and open betas, as well as the Head-Start Program period. Does that time count toward my rewards?

A: No. Veteran Rewards are for the number of months a player has had an active account, so the beta and Head-Start Program periods do not count toward accruing Veteran Rewards.

Q: Does the free month that was included with my game purchase count toward my Veteran Rewards time?

A: Yes, the game time included with the purchase of Aion counts as your first month. You'll be eligible to redeem your first Veteran Rewards on the first day of your second month.

Q: I have multiple Aion game accounts, and some are newer than others. Will my Veteran Rewards for my oldest account apply to my other accounts as well?

A: No. Veteran Rewards are based on each individual Aion game account.

Q: Will each character I have available now or will create in the future be able to redeem each of the Veteran Rewards that I have earned?

A: Yes, you will be eligible to redeem each appropriate month's Veteran Rewards once for every character you create on a respective Aion account.

Community Development

Bixie, Elyos Ranger on [ENG]Kahrun, asks:

“I personally believe that community in MMORPGs is created by game design, so can you please tell us what plans you have to develop this in EU Aion, especially in relation to enhanced Legion management tools and volunteer GM and guide programs?”

I agree that game design can be used to promote social interaction and community growth. With Aion, we had this in mind from the beginning. The best example is probably the Abyss. Fortress sieges in the Abyss promote bonding around a common cause and promote the forming of social groups, such as Legions. The Legions in turn provide customization, as displayed by the wide variety of crests used by Legions to identify themselves.

Our community work until now has focused on preparation for launch. In the future, we want to expand on the activities we arrange in the game. We want to promote active events that become beacons, social lighthouses to gather around. Such events will not require the Aion team to run them, and they can come in a variety of forms with community itself driving them. The Eye on Community series is one of our tools to spread the word and promote community activity.

Volunteer programs are very valuable to a community and are a part of what we might see in the future. Countless earnest community members approach us daily to offer their help with forum moderation, game moderation, and other things. We realize how immensely helpful that could be, and while we have not formulated a volunteer program right now that we can point you to, we encourage you to find other ways to help the community grow and improve in the meantime. Plant a seed, and see it grow. If we are able to pursue volunteer activities in an organized manner in the future, we will definitely approach the our excellent community contributors.

Jumping back to what Bixie asked: the Legion system! We do plan to expand the Legion system beyond what it is today, but our focus will not be as simplistic as increasing the size. Fansites, official forums, and blogs are all sources we use when gathering feedback on what types of mechanics you want to see added to the game. Some folks have called for increased warehouse functionality or increased flexibility in rank assignment (or dynamic rank assignment). We hear you, and want to let you know that player feedback takes a seat at the head of the table during our discussion sessions.

Right now, it's too early to specify exactly what feature set you will see in the Legion management tools in the future. We are looking at adding a variety of content to enhance the overall experience of running or being a part of a Legion. Legion housing, for an example, will be a part of this effort.

* * *

In keeping an Eye on Community, we come across many amazing things. Some make us smile at their quirkiness, while others are spectacular accomplishments worth sharing with our desk neighbors.

Eye on Community is intended to be your twenty minutes in the spotlight. If you look past the shameless pun we used in the name, you will find this to be a great venue for showing off, as well as a great venue for reading up on what is happening in the community.

It contains very useful information that is easy to miss—especially in the beginning when so many other things wait to be discovered in the game—unless you are focusing on optimizing your combat performance.
New Website

The elysium website have reached a hole new level with this website upgrade. It have been updated with modern web technologies that are invisible to the eye but should help on the server, and make your experience of the website a lot smoother. As you may be abel to see there have been some changed here and there though.

First of all the theme of the website have been redesigned to reflect your new game (Aion Online), with the help of Nergal, who have done the design for most of the new website.

One of the other major updated to the website is the new home page. I have tried to create a page from where you all will be abel to see what have been happening on the website since you last visited, better then what the old one did. Resent forum topics have been changed to resent events and now shows all gallery images / comments, blog posts / comments and forum posts and replies. The recent news panel have also been split up with a few new things, such as Blog posts, and a feature panel where the administrators / Templars of the guild can post what ever they may like.

Which brings me to another addition, which is the blogging system. Every member of Elysium now have the ability to have there own blog, and with its own unique RSS feed that people from around the world can subscribe to.

There is plenty of other features that have been added to the site but I wont bore your all with more of this talk, I just want to wish you all good luck in the future and with Aion Online
The same restrictions as was on the closed beta concerning level caps is in place, you will however be using the 1.5 live client with all updates which will be the client used at launch. All characters from the closed beta is now wiped and those used in the Open Beta will be as well, don't burn yourself out on the Beta, relax through the content and enjoy yourself, save some for the live launch!

Work is still in progress on the website, since I have so much to do at work I thought I might as well start adding some content, via blogs and such. I do hope that people will sue this fuction to make it a much more dynamic and enjoyable site. My vision of sorts is that you shouldn't need to leave the page and go around everywhere looking for news from the community, you'll get pretty much everything you need from a glance on the homepage.

Faction Choice

Now that it's decided to go to Aion, there is this to decide upon, which faction?

The Asmodians
The Asmodians are a brave and hardy people. The Cataclysm separated them from the Elyos and plunged them into a world of ice and darkness. To survive such desolation is one thing, but to thrive and prosper as the Asmodians did is quite another. Asmodian skin is pale or dusky, and their eyes have adapted to low light by gaining an otherworldly glow that is most pronounced during combat. Ascended Asmodian Daevas are blessed with strength and the ability to fly, and their feathered wings are dark in color.

Asmodians are generous and fiercely loyal to their own. Asmodians would sooner give their lives in battle than see the life of a comrade taken away. They do not think twice before fighting ferociously against outsiders, showing little or no mercy against Elyos especially.

Asmodians live in the upper half of Atreia, known as Asmodae. Their capital city is Pandaemonium. They follow the Shedim Lords, the five Empyrean Lords ordered by Siel and Israphel to protect the upper foundation of the Tower of Eternity, which is now known as the Tower of Darkness.

The Elyos

The Elyos are a beautiful and radiant people. The Cataclysm separated them from the Asmodians and left them to thrive in a bountiful world bathed in golden light and starlight. Elyos are comforting, warm, and friendly, but against foes, they are not kindly or benevolent. The ascended forms of Elyos Daevas have stunning, angelic wings, and their immense strength belies their graceful appearance.

The splendor of the Elyos physical form and the colorful, fertile land the Elyos live in has also led them to become arrogant. The Elyos believe that they are blessed by Aion, while the Asmodians, cast into darkness by the Cataclysm, are seen by the Elyos as twisted and cursed creatures.

The Elyos occupy the lower half of Atreia, known as Elysea. Their capital city is Sanctum. The Elyos serve the five Seraphim Lords who guided them to safety when all seemed lost. The stump of the Tower of Eternity that stands on Elysea is known as the Tower of Light. It serves as a constant reminder to the Elyos people of the terrible mistake perpetuated by the Asmodian people and their Shedim Lords.

Don't forget to cast your vote!
